Since the early days of owning my Amiga I have dabbled with Desktop
Publishing, progressing from Textcraft Plus through to Pagesetter and then
Pro Page 4. Gradually skills and output have improved and while magazines
(especially Megadisc) have been helpful I felt the need to progress
further and searched for other information.
The problem with most books covering DTP is that they are all Mac or PC
based and are program specific. I just wanted something generic which
covered aspects of presentation. Thankfully there is such a publication
"Looking Good in Print" by Roger C Parker.
Now in its Third Edition with over 250,000 copies it is easy to see why
this book has universal appeal. It contains over 400 pages covering such
topics as Graphic Design, Common Pitfalls, Designing Newsletters, Business
Communications, Forms etc.
Looking Good in Print is organized into three sections.
Section One "The elements of Graphic Design" outlines common graphic
tools available in DTP and the underlying principals on design.
Chapters incude
Tools of Organisation
The Architecture of Type
Building Blocks of Graphic Design
Working with Illustrations
Section Two "Putting Your Knowledge to Work" features makeovers that
demonstrate how different projects can be enhanced by simply rearranging
the design elements in more effective ways.
Section Three "Getting Down to Business" outlines how to apply the basic
tools of graphic design to specific projects.
Chapters include
Designing Effective Newsletters
Magazine and Newspaper Advertisements
Presentation Graphics
Business Communications
The book is well set out, easy to read and has hundreds of graphics as
examples. It is suitable for beginners as well as advanced users.
I bought my copy at Dymocks in Adelaide ($49.95) and it should be
available at most book stores.
